Account Takeover

A fraudster steals documents containing account information and personal data from your customer’s mailbox and/or trash can without her knowledge. And, the fraudster purchases additional personal information about this consumer from various online sources.

Days later, the fraudster uses the stolen information to call your financial institution pretending she is the consumer. She explains that she is moving and asks that her mailing address on the account be changed. She uses stolen information to convince the customer service representative that she is the accountholder. Soon after the address has been changed to the fraudster’s location, she calls back and requests a second card be sent for her “spouse”.

Can you protect this customer from account takeover fraud?

Fighting Back with First Data’s Fraud Mitigation Tools

  • With First Data Falcon,™ you can set strategies that monitor the sequence of critical non-monetary transactions such as changing an address and then requesting a second card. If for example, it’s been less than 30 days since an address change when an additional card has been requested, First Data Falcon can assign a risk value to this activity and queue the account to the Fraud Detection Work Center for review. Or, clients can choose to utilize the Rules platform to force queue accounts where this sequence of critical non-monetary activity has occurred.
  • After being queued for this sequence of critical non-monetary transactions, you can choose to send an automated message to the accountholder through 2Way-Connect,SM verifying that she did indeed request a change of address and a second card. If the accountholder indicates that she did not make such a request through 2Way-Connect’s built-in response capture system, the account’s status is updated to fraudulent.

Once the account’s status has been flagged as fraudulent, clients can choose to utilize FDR First Track® to manage virtually all required back-end tasks associated with fraudulent accounts, including consumer notification, association reporting and chargebacks.
